Gyrodyne Proposal on "Hold" Pending Studies

Former defense contractor Gyrodyne will have to wait up to a year for the results of an environmental-impact statement before Smithtown officials rule on the company’s application to subdivide its 62-acre property on the Smithtown-Brookhaven border.


That was the unanimous decision of the Smithtown Planning Board late Wednesday.
“There is significant potential impact not only to the Town of Smithtown but to our neighbors” in nearby municipalities, board chairman Conrad Chayes said.  MORE

Greater SB Action Coalition Against Gyrodyne Development:

Endorses Hahan/Trotta County Plan to Purchase Parcel as Open Space

The Coalition held a press conference on November 10 on the Smithtown Town Hall steps to express its concern about the proposed mega development on the remaining 62 acres of Gyrodyne/Flowerfield property.  The press conference also included Assemblyman Steve Englebright, Leg. Kara Hahan and Brookhaven Councilwoman Valerie Cartright. Leg. Hahan announced the introduction of a bill that would allow Suffolk County to pursue the land and create open space.

Brookhaven Sees Traffic Nightmare is St. James Property is Developed

Some Brookhaven residents and Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) are concerned about the potential negative impact development of a St. James property might have on Stony Brook Road.


On Aug. 2, the Suffolk County Planning Committee approved the conceptual subdivision of a 62-acre parcel of land in St. James owned by Gyrodyne, LLC. The property, known locally as Flowerfield, borders Route 25A and Stony Brook Road, and the plan includes approval for a 150-room hotel, two medical office buildings and two assisted living facilities.
